Eastview Teach Like a PIRATE DayOctober 26, 2017 — Today was Teach Like a PIRATE Day (#tlap) at Eastview Elementary School.  You might ask yourself, what is Teach Like a Pirate Day?  Well, “It’s a day at Eastview where I have challenged our teachers to try something new, try something exciting to engage their kids”, said Tami Martin, Principal at Eastview.  It has become an annual day at Eastview that both the students and teachers look forward to.

Schools from across the country are embracing this #tlap movement that was started by New York Times best-selling author and social studies teacher Dave Burgess. In his book, “Teach Like a PIRATE,” Dave challenges educators to develop lessons for students that incorporate PIRATE- like traits — Passion, Immersion, Rapport, Ask and Analyze, Transformation, and Enthusiasm.

The excitement of the day started out when Dave Burgess himself reached out through Twitter to the Eastview Eagles.  “Hey this is a special shout out from the caption to the Eastview Eagles on your Teach Like a PIRATE Day.  Thank you so much for the extra energy, the heart, the soul that you’re putting into making school amazing for the kids,” he said.

From costumes to creative learning concepts, the feel as you walked the halls of Eastview was pure exciting.   Classes throughout the building were dissecting their reading for text features in their medical masks and gloves, doing pumpkin math, and learning the art of beekeeping from a real beekeeper - just to name a few of the special activates.  The teachers of Eastview took their normally dynamic and effective teaching methods to a new level.
